Children’s Hospital of San Antonio adds acclaimed pulmonary specialist to team
Specialist will lead Cystic Fibrosis Center and academic pulmonary medicine program

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (February 13, 2014) The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, home to one of only two Cystic Fibrosis (CF) centers in South-Central Texas, has recruited Felix Shardonofsky, M.D., to champion its CF Center and academic pulmonary medicine program. With 30 years of respiratory medicine experience including ten years at the CF Center at Texas Children’s Hospital, Shardonofsky brings world-class CF care to the children of our community.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of nearly 30,000 children nationally. Shardonofsky comes to San Antonio to expand access to pediatric CF care in San Antonio and beyond.

“I came to San Antonio to be a part of something unique,” said Shardonofsky, section head of pulmonary medicine and professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. “The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio gives me an opportunity to provide a critically needed medical service to the children of San Antonio and South-Central Texas as well as collaborate with some of the best pediatric specialists in the country.”

Shardonofsky plans on growing the CF Center and pulmonary clinic to include an expansion of services that will better benefit young patients. As a highly-esteemed published researcher, he will also explore opportunities for clinical research at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio that could lead to new therapies and better treatments for CF patients.

“We want to offer the best care possible to our patients - that’s what matters most,” said Shardonofsky. “We’re focused on building this program and services to offer the best patient-and-family-centered, state-of-the-art care with the support of the exceptional specialists that CF care requires.“

Shardonofsky isn’t building a world-class pulmonary clinic and CF Center on his own. His highly skilled team includes Martha Morse, M.D., pulmonologist and associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Rebecca Pena, pediatric nurse practitioner and instructor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, and supporting staff such as medical assistants, respiratory therapists and nutritionists. Patients also have access to on-site pediatric gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, and geneticists that provide a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to pediatric care.

Beyond pediatric pulmonary medicine, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio continues to expand their team of pediatric specialists including the latest additions to the Baylor College of Medicine faculty roster, listed below:
