Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Nursery
The Level III intensive care and “step-down” units provide care to neonates (infants less than one month old) throughout the course of their hospitalization. The Special Care Nursery, or “step-down” unit, provides intermediate care for children who do not need intensive medical care. Common diagnoses include extreme prematurity, severe respiratory distress syndrome, severe asphyxia, congenital heart disease, open neural tube defects, abdominal wall defects and diaphragmatic hernia. Advanced treatment modalities available include High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), Inhaled Nitric Oxide (INO) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
